Spring is here and Summer is already in full bloom which means allergy season has already begun and terrorizing millions of people! Your eyes start to itch like crazy, your nose running without any mercy and the endless sneezing can totally ruin a perfectly beautiful day.
Yes, there are plenty of over-the-counter allergy medication these days as well as many prescriptions that may aid you in this time of need. But all these can take a toll on your stomach and sometimes leave you feeling even worse than before with drowsiness and feelings of "fogginess". SO what are you supposed to do if these things just don't do much for you?
Well, here's my little device that has helped me get through this nightmarish season with a bit more composure. The Neti Pot has been one of the greatest things I've discovered in the recent years and has helped me through clearing the gunk up in the sinus area so that I can breath easier. Not only is it great during allergy season, it's fantastic all year round for keeping your nasal passages free and clear from everyday debris.
It's not as strange or difficult as most people think when it comes to using this fabulous device. There are several different versions available and now even some regular supermarkets carry them and you can most definitely order it from a lot of places online. I bought mine from amazon.com and this is the one I use. It's great because it's ceramic and you can run it in the dishwasher without any concern. And you don't have to buy the pricey premeasured saline solution or the salt packets. You can simply use regular iodized salt but you have to be fairly precise with the amount you put in the water. I usually just eyeball it to about enough salt to cover half of a teaspoon and mix it with med. hot water (just enough to feel warm on your hands because your nasal passage will be more sensitive to heat) thoroughly until all the salt has been incorporated then insert the spout into one of your nostrils and tilt your head about 45º to the side while you're hunched over the sink. (Oh, remember to keep your mouth opened while doing this!) The water will eventually come out of the other nostril and you can just let it run freely until all the solution has been drained. Now, don't go blowing your nose like crazy to get all the excess water out of your nose, just blow gently without plugging the other nostril. Then you repeat on the opposite side and voilà, your nose will be feeling all dandy! The only downside to this is how ugly and embarrassing you look while performing this ritual but I think the benefits far outweigh the hideous visuals.
So try the neti pot and feel better this season from the allergy attacks, your nose will thank you!
Happy healthy nostril cleaning!
